[WALTON, Cecile]. Polish Fairy Tales. Translated from A.J. Glinski by Maude Ashurst Biggs. Illustrated by Cecile Walton. London: John Lane, 1920. 4to, xvi 96pp. Blue cloth decoratively stamped in gilt. Pictorial endpapers; 20 color plates. Spine ends a bit worn, corners a bit rubbed, rear cover a tad scuffed, front hinge starting, endpapers a tad aged, else a clean, bright copy. From the collection of artist Charles Mikolaycek, with his signature!

First English edition. Glinksi, Poland’s master folklore writer, and his nation’s equivalent of the Brothers Grimm, spent many years in the mid-nineteenth century travelling all over his nation’s lands, listening to and writing down the stories as told to him by the ordinary folk. In this manner, he captured Polish folklore as it truly was the way that the peasants would tell their children as part of a wide-ranging oral tradition. Wonderfully captured in Scottish illustrator Cecile Waltons lush color plates, this is a truly charming collection of fairy tales.
